Learning to live independently is an important step towards greater freedom, confidence, and self-reliance. Our Independent Living Skills Workshop is designed to help participants develop the practical skills needed to successfully manage everyday life in their own home.

Through hands-on activities, demonstrations, guided practice, and supportive learning, participants gain valuable knowledge and experience in household management, cooking, cleaning, laundry, organisation, and personal care routines.

Each workshop is delivered in a supportive and inclusive environment where participants can learn at their own pace while building confidence, independence, and life skills that can be used every day.

This practical workshop focuses on real-world skills that participants can immediately apply in their own home.

Rather than learning from books alone, participants learn through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and guided practice using real household items and appliances.

The workshop is designed to build confidence, encourage independence, and develop routines that support successful everyday living.

Cooking & Food Preparation Skills – preparing simple, affordable, nutritious meals and snacks.

Cleaning & Household Maintenance – understanding cleaning routines, products, and safe household practices.

Laundry & Clothing Care Skills – washing, drying, ironing, folding, and storing clothing correctly.

Personal Independence Skills – developing routines and responsibilities that support independent living.

Participants receive guidance and support throughout each activity, helping them build confidence and practical skills in a positive and encouraging environment.

Kitchen Essentials & Organisation

Participants learn the essential items required to maintain a functional kitchen, including:

  • Plates, bowls, cups and cutlery
  • Cooking utensils and kitchen tools
  • Food storage containers
  • Cleaning products and paper towels

Participants also learn:

  • Washing dishes and kitchen utensils
  • Putting away dishes correctly
  • Organising kitchen cupboards
  • Safe food storage practices
  • Understanding what belongs in the refrigerator, freezer, or pantry
  • Maintaining a clean and hygienic kitchen

Affordable & Healthy Meals

Participants learn practical cooking and food preparation skills including:

  • Basic ingredients needed for affordable meals
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner meal ideas
  • Healthy food choices and nutrition basics
  • Preparing simple and tasty meals
  • Budget-friendly shopping tips
  • Food organisation and storage
  • Understanding shelf life and expiry dates
  • Freezer storage and food preservation

The focus is on creating meals that are affordable, nutritious, and easy to prepare independently.

Home Presentation & Cleaning

Participants learn how to maintain a comfortable and organised living area by developing skills such as:

  • Understanding basic furniture and household items
  • Organising living spaces
  • Maintaining presentation and cleanliness
  • Sweeping floors
  • Vacuuming carpets and rugs
  • Cleaning furniture
  • Cleaning televisions and electronic devices safely

These skills help participants create a welcoming and comfortable home environment.

Personal Space & Organisation

Participants learn practical bedroom management skills including:

  • Essential furniture and bedding requirements
  • Bedroom organisation and presentation
  • Making a bed correctly
  • Changing sheets, quilt covers, and pillowcases
  • Washing bedding and linen
  • Folding clothes
  • Hanging clothing correctly
  • Organising wardrobes and shoes
  • Vacuuming and sweeping
  • Basic ironing skills for shirts, pants, and other clothing

These activities promote independence, organisation, and personal responsibility.

Hygiene & Cleaning Skills

Participants learn how to maintain personal hygiene areas safely and effectively, including:

  • Essential bathroom items
  • Soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • Towels and toilet paper
  • Bathroom organisation
  • Cleaning mirrors
  • Cleaning basins
  • Cleaning showers
  • Cleaning toilets
  • Floor cleaning and hygiene routines

The focus is on maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic bathroom environment.

Clothing Care & Laundry Skills

Participants gain hands-on experience using common laundry equipment and developing clothing care skills.

Topics include:

  • Using a washing machine
  • Using a clothes dryer
  • Using clothes lines and drying racks
  • Understanding laundry powders and liquids
  • Fabric softener use
  • Determining correct detergent quantities
  • Hot versus cold water washing
  • Preventing colour runs and dye transfer
  • Sorting laundry correctly
  • Basic stain removal techniques

These practical skills help participants care for clothing independently and confidently.

    Each workshop is delivered by experienced facilitators who provide guidance, encouragement, and hands-on support throughout every activity.

    Workshops are inclusive, engaging, and designed to support participants at their own pace.

    No previous experience is required — just a willingness to learn new skills and build confidence for independent living.

    Participants can attend 1 - 3 sessions per day depending on available funding
